The LearnersPoint IELTS course offers a comprehensive introduction to the IELTS test, with 40 hours of interactive practice materials. IELTS Preparation Course Outline

Listening

There are 4 sections, 40 questions and a variety of questions. The listening test lasts for around 30 minutes (and 10 minutes’ transfer time). In the Listening classes with LearnersPoint, you will learn how to listen attentively and answer the diverse questions with step-by-step guidelines and plenty of practice tests. A wide range of listening skills are assessed. These include:

Marking

Each correct answer receives 1 mark. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale and scores are reported in whole and half bands.

Reading

There are 40 questions with a variety of questions types and 3 passages each for the Academic test and General Training test. In the Reading classes, you will learn how to comprehend a reading text and find information quickly and efficiently. You will be guided through the specific question types and learn how to answer them. Our practice tests will fine-tune your reading skills, improve your ability to access the diverse topic sections, and help you avoid common errors.

Skills Assessed

  • Understanding inferences and implied meaning
  • Recognizing writer’s opinion

Marking

Writing

There are two writing tasks and you are required to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2. In Academic Writing Task 1, you are presented with a graph, table, chart, map or diagram and asked to describe, summarize or write a report. In General Training Writing Task 1, however, you may be assessed on your ability to engage in personal correspondence in order to elicit and provide general factual information, discuss expenses needs, express opinions, and so on.

In Academic Writing Task 2, you are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem; the General Training Task 2 also requires you to write an essay, however, the writing here can be slightly more personal in style than its academic counterpart.

In the Writing classes, you will learn to prepare for the specific tasks that will be given to you in the test. The lectures focus on improving the skills you need and give ideas on how to plan your answers. You'll find out what to expect in the IELTS Writing test and can work under the trainers’ directions to make sure your answers are flawless, focused, and completed within the allotted time.

In both tasks, you are assessed on your ability to write a response which is appropriate in terms of:

Marking

You are assessed on your performance on each task by certified IELTS examiners according to IELTS Writing assessment criteria:

  • Task Achievement/Response
  • Coherence & Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Task 2 carries twice as much weight as Task 1 to the writing score. Scores are reported in whole and half bands.

Speaking

The Speaking module is a face-to-face interview with the examiner. This session is recorded, lasts for 11-14 minutes, and comprising 3 parts (Introduction and Interview, Individual long turn, and Two-way discussion). The Speaking lessons focus on the specific parts of the IELTS Speaking test, with professional advice and practice tests which teach you how to respond. Our sessions cover what questions and topics are expected, what the examiner is looking for and how to prepare accordingly.

  • The ability to speak at length on a given topic using appropriate language and organizing ideas coherently
  • The ability to express and justify opinions and to analyze, discuss and speculate about ideas

Marking

You are assessed on your performance throughout the test by certified IELTS examiners according to the IELTSSpeaking assessment criteria (Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy and Pronunciation)

Scores are reported in whole and half bands.

Mock Exam

You will take the Listening, Reading and Writing tests all on one day non-stop with no breaks in between, so it is important to do the practice tests under similar conditions. After completion of your IELT Preparation, we give you a mock exam where you practice all 4 tests under similar test conditions.
