7 Failproof Steps to Pass the PMP Exam | Learners Point Academy

A Project Manager is a professional who is tasked with organizing, planning, and executing projects while working within corporate restraints such as budgets and schedules. They are also responsible for being at the forefront of teams, chalking up targets, maintaining stable communication with stakeholders, and making sure that the closure of a project matches its initial scenario.

Whether it is for the construction of a building, the development of a new computer system, running a marketing campaign, or the launch of a new product, it is the Project Manager who is held responsible for its success or failure. Since their “responsibilities” is an umbrella term that encompasses a vast number of duties, there is no major difference in how they are perceived across various companies.

That level of recognition only comes with a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Recognized internationally as the gold standard for PMPs, the certification is earned by clearing the PMP certification exam that judges your skills and qualities relating to the field. It should be obvious that only textual knowledge cannot give you an edge over your competition.

Even if you are up to date with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide, the exam is engineered in such a way that its primary objective is the outright elimination of candidates. Not only are most of the questions scenario-based, but the amount of mathematical and theoretical questions is dangerously low in number. That way, everyone other than the very best is filtered out. Here are some pointers to help you realize your full potential:

1. Lock on to your target. You cannot afford to miss the shot.

To earn the PMP certification, you will be given a total of 3 chances to take the exam in case you do not succeed once or twice. Since each attempt will inevitably cost you money, it is wise to prepare yourself to be able to get it on your first try. Since it is recommended to take at least 3 to 4 months to prepare yourself, try to learn the date of your exam as soon as possible.

2. Map out your study plan. Knowing the battlefield has its advantages.

While the recommended rate of studying for this exam is 3 hours a day, you can take it down to as low as 6 hours a week if you have other things on your schedule. It would be highly advised to stay away from addictive habits such as browsing through social media or binge-watching on TV shows or sports. In other words, you would be wise to stay away from your phone as much as possible.

3. Take notes. Prepare them accordingly. Keep your weapons well-oiled.

Lectures are an integral part of your preparation and cannot afford to be missed. But more importantly, you must make sure to take down concise summarizations on them. Handouts are another source of learning since they are a form of ready-made notes themselves. Furthermore, even if you do have your notes prepared, revising them at periodic intervals would be wise given you are prone to forgetting old sections or modules after getting introduced to new ones.

4. Keep one coach instead of many. Multiple advisors only contribute to the chaos.

You have the internet at your disposal. Search by individual requirements or qualifications and in time you will come across someone who suits your tastes. Whether you are unsuited for classroom training or dread any classes whatsoever during the weekend, only someone you are comfortable with can bring out your talents.

5. Practice makes perfect. Drills keep soldiers in top shape.

The duration of the exam is 4 hours. While it may sound like a lot, it is the opposite in reality. One of the most efficient ways to overcome this hurdle is to take as many mock tests as you can. This will not only sharpen your knowledge of question patterns but also polish your time management skills.

6. On the day, leave no space for confusion. Diversions sabotage your chances of victory.

The vigilance in the PMP exam is extremely high. So be professional and careful. Arrive before your reporting time just to be safe, and avoid taking your own vehicle to the exam centre. The last thing you would want on the day of your exam is parking chaos. Don’t forget to carry your appointment letter and the valid photo ID proof that acts as your identification at the exam centre.

7. Read and re-read the questions before answering. Charging blindly on the battlefield spells instantaneous death.

The questions will be objective in format. But even if beginning to answer as soon as possible would feel alluring, be sure to read them properly. Divide your time frame so that you can answer at least one question properly in a minute. That way, you will have time to revise even after you have answered everything. Also, make sure not to have too much fluid intake before the exam for obvious reasons.

The PMP certification exam is not easy, but it is also not the stuff of nightmares. As long as you don’t lose sight of your destination, it is a goal worth striving for. the latest edition of the PMBOK can provide you with the necessary tools, techniques, and jargon along with relevant formulae and definitions of processes, but success is yours to strive for. For example, if you announce your intention of earning PMP credentials to your family or friends even before appearing for the examination, you will be drawing needless pressure and burden yourself with uncalled-for expectations.

An efficient move is to frame it as a surprise after you have earned it. There is no guarantee that you will get it on your first try, just like it is not set in stone that you will fail. You are the one who best knows your abilities and limitations. All you need to do is trust in them and not second-guess yourself.
