    Frequently asked questions

CISSP is especially suited to experienced professionals because it goes beyond teaching individual security technologies. It develops the ability to understand how risk, governance, architecture, identity, networks, operations, and application security work together at the enterprise level.

ISC2 itself positions CISSP for security professionals who lead or aspire to lead cybersecurity programs, manage security strategy, or hold senior technical positions requiring strategic decision-making.

The current ISC2 CISSP Exam Outline covers eight domains:

    • Security and Risk Management – 16%
    • Asset Security – 10%
    • Security Architecture and Engineering – 13%
    • Communication and Network Security – 13%
    • Identity and Access Management (IAM) – 13%
    • Security Assessment and Testing – 12%
    • Security Operations – 13%
    • Software Development Security – 10%

The Learners Point CISSP curriculum covers all eight areas and connects them to practical exercises and workplace scenarios, rather than treating them only as exam topics.

According to the current ISC2 CISSP Exam Outline, the CISSP examination uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT).

    The current exam format is:

    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Number of items: 100–150
    • Format: Multiple-choice and advanced item types
    • Passing score: 700 out of 1000
    • Domains tested: All eight CISSP domains
    • Testing: Approved Pearson testing locations

The examination tests much more than factual recall. Candidates need to interpret situations and select appropriate security decisions using risk, governance, and technical principles.

Participants can develop a broad combination of technical, risk, governance, and leadership capabilities, including:

    • Enterprise Cybersecurity Risk Management
    • Security Governance and Compliance
    • Security Architecture Evaluation
    • Asset and Data Protection
    • Network Security
    • Identity and Access Management

These capabilities are increasingly important as organisations address evolving cybersecurity skills needs. ISC2's 2025 workforce research found that 59% of respondents reported critical or significant cybersecurity skills needs, with AI and cloud security among the areas identified

Many professionals considering CISSP already have years of industry experience. They don't need a trainer who simply reads from slides.

The Learners Point CISSP curriculum combines 40 hours of structured learning with practical application through activities such as:

    • Risk-Mapping Exercises
    • Data-Classification Workshops
    • Architecture Assessments
    • Network-Security Design
    • IAM Exercises**
    • **Security-Assessment Simulations

For professionals who already have cybersecurity experience, CISSP knowledge can support progression towards positions with greater responsibility, including:

    • Information Security Manager
    • Cybersecurity Manager
    • Security Architect
    • Senior Security Consultant
    • Cyber Risk Manager
    • GRC Manager

The next certification depends on the security specialisation a professional wants to develop. Professionals interested in cloud security can consider CCSP. CISSP holders may be able to satisfy the CCSP professional-experience requirement through their CISSP experience, subject to ISC2's current certification requirements.

Experienced CISSP professionals can also consider ISC2 concentrations such as:

    • ISSAP – Security Architecture
    • ISSEP – Security Engineering
    • ISSMP – Security Management

Professionals concentrating on governance and compliance may also consider CGRC, while those seeking deeper information-security management capability may explore CISM.

No. CISSP knowledge is relevant across security management, architecture, consulting, GRC, risk, security operations, and senior technical roles. Its value lies in helping professionals understand security across an entire organization rather than within one narrow specialisation.

To become a CISSP-certified professional, ISC2 requires at least five years of cumulative full-time professional experience in two or more of the eight CISSP domains. Certain relevant degrees or approved credentials may satisfy up to one year of that requirement.

Professionals who pass the CISSP examination but do not yet have the required experience can become an Associate of ISC2 and subsequently work towards fulfilling the experience requirement.
